Relaxing aboard Mui Ne’s basket boats
RELAXING ABOARD MUI NE’S BASKET BOATS
Breaking gentle waves and bobbing on the waters in a bamboo basket boat or thuyen thung is one of the many fun things to do while vacationing in Mui Ne, and will surely be a memorable experience during one’s stay in the coastal city of Phan Thiet.
Adventurous tourists who have tried thuyen thung can test their rowing skills in Mui Ne. Those who do not dare to step foot inside a basket boat can stand on shore and photograph basket boats from afar.
Local fishermen believe that riding inside a basket boat is quite safe if one knows how to properly control it. However, learning proper technique is a challenge for Vietnamese and foreign tourists who have never ridden in one before.
Although learning can be difficult at first, floating in a basket boat is generally safe on the calm sea of Mui Ne. In fact, the coastal city’s name is derived from fishermen who took shelter there during stormy seasons.
Vacationers will see many basket boats on the beaches of Mui Ne, but should never rent one directly from a fisherman because the language barrier will not allow for proper communication of how to use the vessel.
It is a good idea for vacationers to use services provided by resorts and sports clubs despite higher prices because professionals will be able to provide life jackets and instruction.
Guests are taught how to sit firmly in the basket boat and proper rowing technique. Novice rowers must practice until they have mastered the skill. Staffers are always on hand to accompany guests on the water in case any problems arise.
Locals say that the best time to learn and practice basket boat rowing is in the morning when the sea is calmest. It is important to sit down, relax and let the boat drift naturally on the waves of the turquoise sea.
